He sensed, rather than saw, the figure in the shadows and his hand instinctively moved towards the hilt of his sword but, he realised, he was not wearing his sword belt. As his eyes began to adjust, he could make out the shape of his weapon hanging on the bed-post at the head of the bed, nearer to the shadowed presence than it was to him.
